My Journey Through Portugal's Hidden Gems

Updated: Aug 2, 2023

Welcome to Portugal, a land unlike any other! While most countries draw visitors with a handful of attractions, Portugal offers a multitude of experiences that surpass your expectations with each passing day as the sun shines brighter, the sights get lovelier, the cuisine tastes better, and the locals are warmer and welcoming than ever. After a 1-month road trip across this Mediterranean jewel in the heart of the Atlantic, I was hooked. Join me as I embark on a road trip across Portugal by visiting the prerequisite castles, churches and fortresses – then quickly detoured off the beaten path to discover hidden gems and unveil the true essence of this remarkable, historic country.

My journey begins on the sunswept beaches of the Algarve, nestled in the SW corner of Portugal. After joyfully leaving behind the bustling city vibes of Faro, Algarve's Capital, and the touristy nightlife of Albifueria, I instantly fell in love with Lagos (not to be confused with Lagos, Nigeria). Here, dramatic limestone cliffs tumble down to the ocean.

Here, a historic lighthouse stands tall as beacon dispelling the dark, while caves and grottos born from the relentless crashing of the Atlantic waves beg to be explored. You can easily spend a few days basking in the Mediterranean sun of this charming town, without a care in the world.

If you are feeling adventurous, the renowned Ponta Da Piedade offers steep stairs with handrails, and descends right into the grottos called Passeio As Grutas – sensational!

Miradouros (viewing platforms) everywhere, highlighting the most picturesque vistas -Insta worth right?

Sunsets over the cliffs are to die for, painting the sky in colors that are surreal

When you combine the allure of these beautiful beaches with the captivating charm of Lagos’ old-world vibe, it's a no-brainer. From worn cobblestone streets and quintessential blue tiles showcasing the city’s history, you’ll find yourself sorely tempted by street shops peddling Italian designer fashions at eye-popping discounts. And Lagos boasts fresh seafood sourced straight from the ocean. The blend of history, culture & cuisine - an irresistible combo.

Fave part was staying at the Cascade Wellness Resort, right smack dab on the ocean.

Each morning I was greeted by made-to-order, mouth-watering entrees, steaming lattes, tropical fruits, and freshly juices – let's not forget one of the best veggie meals I've ever had, accompanied by a tantalizing homemade chili sauce with a fiery kick. Yummy!

After savoring many scrumptious meals, one of the coolest things the Cascade Resort offers are complementary workout classes at - get this - an outdoor gym, “Sculptors”!

ALMOST makes you want to work out, right? 🤣

After all that gym time a gal works up an appetite! Best way to quench that? Take a 5-minute stroll from Cascade Resort to the most breathtaking restaurant in Lagos, RESTAURANT MIRANDUS https://vivendamiranda.com/restaurant-mirandus/

embracing the ocean in a stunning, modernistic hotel, The Vivenda Miranda https://vivendamiranda.com – best way to top off a picture-perfect Portuguese holiday!

And with a veggie menu to boot, this is one happy gal :)

As dusk gently descends over Viandus, mesmerizing views of old town Lagos emerge…

Now you understand why I dedicated four days during my one-week stay in the Algarve admiring the golden hour at Viandus, star gazing over dinner, in total agreement with all the digital nomads that are calling The Algarve their new "home".

The allure of this place is undeniable, no wonder it captivates the hearts of those seeking a harmonious balance surrounded by natural beauty and a thriving, creative digital community.
